A remote island. A violent death. A disappearance that has never been resolved.

This week on Coffee & Crime AU, we return to Phillip Island and the 1986 killing of Beth Barnard, a young agricultural science graduate and ranger whose death became one of Victoria’s most enduring and contested mysteries.

The case

Beth Barnard was found dead at her home on Phillip Island in September 1986. In the hours surrounding her death, another woman, Vivienne Cameron, disappeared. Her body has never been found.

Police came to believe Vivienne was responsible for Beth’s death before taking her own life, but the case has never produced the kind of final, physical resolution that removes all doubt. Decades later, questions remain around the movements of those involved, the evidence at the scene, and what may have happened after Beth was killed.

In this episode

The episode follows the events in chronological order, staying close to the night itself and separating established evidence from later theory. It looks at Beth’s life on Phillip Island, the relationships surrounding the case, the events leading into the killing, the discovery of Beth’s body, and the disappearance that followed.

Where accounts conflict, they are treated as disputed rather than presented as fact. The aim is to understand what the evidence shows, what remains uncertain, and why this case still refuses to close neatly.
