⚠️ Content Warning: This post discusses real crime scene evidence from the Belanglo State Forest murders. Some images may be distressing. They are shared for their historical and investigative significance, not for shock value.

One of the most confronting parts of researching the Belanglo murders is examining the original crime scene photographs.

Documenting the Reality of Australia's Major Belanglo Homicide Investigation Photographs

These images are difficult to look at—not because of sensationalism, but because they document the reality of one of Australia's most significant homicide investigations.

Every photograph of the Belanglo Investigation tells investigators something.

Some record the exact location where victims were discovered. Others document the surrounding bushland, the positioning of evidence, or the painstaking forensic work carried out by detectives and crime scene officers. Before anything could be moved, every detail had to be photographed, measured and mapped.

Looking through these files, it's easy to appreciate just how challenging this investigation really was. Belanglo State Forest covers thousands of hectares of dense bushland. Many of the victims had been exposed to the elements for extended periods, meaning investigators had to rely on meticulous forensic examination, ballistics, clothing, personal belongings, dental records, and eventually DNA analysis to identify victims and build the case.

Capturing Isolation: The Critical Role of Photography in the Ivan Milat Case

Several photographs also highlight how isolated the crime scenes were. Even today, standing in those locations gives a sense of how easily someone could disappear without being seen.

These photographs also demonstrate the extraordinary work undertaken by Task Force Air. Every piece of evidence had to be documented with precision because each photograph would later become part of the prosecution's case against Ivan Milat. Collectively, they helped establish timelines, corroborate witness statements, and connect physical evidence recovered from Belanglo State Forest to Milat's property and possessions.

Remembering the Humanity Behind Historical Images

While these images are historically important, it's worth remembering that they represent real people whose lives were violently taken. Behind every evidence marker is someone's son, daughter, brother, sister or friend.

As always, I share this material to better understand the investigation—not to sensationalise the tragedy.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts after viewing these photographs. Was there anything that stood out to you about the investigation or the way detectives documented the scenes?
