The Sef Gonzales case became one of Australia’s most disturbing family murder cases — not only because of what happened inside the Gonzales home, but because of what came after.
In this episode of Coffee & Crime AU, we go back to the beginning and follow the story as it unfolded: the family, the pressure behind closed doors, the crime, the strange details that began to surface, and the case that followed.

Where the case stands now
More than two decades after Sef Gonzales was sentenced to life imprisonment, his case is again before the courts — but the current proceeding is an appeal against sentence, not a new appeal against his murder convictions.
In August 2025, Justice Sarah McNaughton referred the whole case to the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal to be dealt with as an appeal against sentence. The application relied on new material concerning Gonzales’ claim of childhood sexual abuse and PTSD, which he argues is relevant to mitigation. The court stressed that the evidence presented at that stage was scant and noted that, on the admissible material then before it, he appeared to have little chance of success on appeal.
His convictions for the murders of Teddy Gonzales, Mary Gonzales and Clodine Gonzales remain in place. A 2007 appeal against conviction was dismissed, as was his earlier challenge to the life sentences.
