EARLY ACCESS: Keli Lane and Tegan Lane — The Baby Who Vanished

Early Access is ready for this week’s episode — and this is one of those cases where the more closely you look at the timeline, the stranger it becomes.

On 14 September 1996, two-day-old Tegan Lane left Auburn Hospital with her mother, Keli Lane.

A few hours later, Keli arrived at her parents’ home without her.

Then she went to a wedding.

Nobody there knew she had just given birth. Almost nobody in Keli’s life even knew Tegan existed.

And after Tegan left Auburn Hospital, there would never be another confirmed sighting of her.

In this episode

I take you through the case in chronological order — the concealed pregnancy, Tegan’s birth, the final confirmed hours at Auburn Hospital, the unexplained gap before Keli appeared in Fairlight, and the wedding that afternoon.

Then we follow what happened when Tegan was finally discovered in paperwork more than three years later, the changing explanations about where she was, the search for the man Keli said was Tegan’s father, the coronial inquest and the murder trial that followed.

Keli Lane was convicted of murdering Tegan in 2010. That conviction remains in force.

But Tegan has never been found. There is no known cause of death and no identified crime scene. Keli continues to deny killing her daughter and says Tegan left with her biological father.

The episode looks at both the case that convinced the jury and the questions that remained afterwards, including later scrutiny of the investigation.

At the centre of all of it is Tegan — a newborn baby who was here, was seen, and then disappeared.
